The Association of
Independent Schools of the ACT (AISACT)
represents all 17 independent schools in the
ACT.
Independent schooling has a
long and proud history of education in Canberra,
starting in the 1920s prior to the opening of
(Old) Parliament House. Today our schools
educate over 12,300 students in schools ranging
in sizes from 1650 to 17 students. One in five
ACT Kindergarten – Year 12 students attends an
independent school, and combined the
non-government sector (that is, Independent and
Catholic Education Office schools) educates
forty-two percent of students in the ACT –
nearly ten percent above the national average.
AISACT represents and
coordinates the views of our member schools to
government, media and in the wider education
sector. We provide a range of services to our
schools, including Australian Government and ACT
Government targeted programs, with the
Association being represented on over fifty
local and national committees, boards, reference
and advisory groups.
Each ACT independent school is separate and
autonomous and governed by its own school board.
AISACT, therefore, does not operate as a system
authority, but brings together the collective
views of our schools. We are a member of the
Independent Schools' Council of Australia (ISCA),
which represents the Associations of Independent
Schools in each State and Territory of Australia
at a national and and international level.
