This document reports on a cross-sectoral initiative for parents and families based in a metropolitan primary school and preschool in South Australia. The project was funded by the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA).

‘Intergenerational ICT and Literacy in a Multicultural Setting’ was conducted through a partnership between the Care Health Education and Community project (CHEC) and Protea Training English Language Services. It was developed and delivered in the Ridley Grove Primary School in response to needs identified by parents from the school and from the co-located Woodville Gardens Preschool.

This report focuses on the key issues identified during the course of the project as having significant gains for participants in terms of social capital and community capacity building including:

• The importance of selecting a location which acknowledged the needs of the participants;

• Designing activities which recognised a broad range of learners’ language and literacy proficiencies;

• Responding to learners’ interests and requests;

• Creating opportunities for learners to link to services not directly related to the computing course;

• Creating opportunities for learners to continue their ICT skill development in other local settings.

Intergenerational ICT Learning and Literacy in a Multicultural Setting - Some reflections on community capacity building

‘Intergenerational ICT learning and literacy in a multicultural setting’ was one of the Care Health Education and Community project’s most successful community building projects. As with the overall CHEC project, a strengths approach and an action research model were used.

The CHEC project was based at the Woodville Gardens Preschool and Ridley Grove R 7 School (South Australia) from June 2002 to June 2004. The main aim of the project was to ‘improve children’s wellbeing and learning by strengthening families and community’.

A 13 week pilot course was conducted in 2003, with significant results for participants. Funding from the ANTA Adult Literacy fund enabled the CHEC facilitator, in partnership with Protea Training, to further develop and deliver two more 10 week courses and a second element to train parent volunteers to work with children on computers.
